Wow – Week 6 already!! We’re over halfway through Michaelmas Term now… Christmas is calling (too soon?!). Anyway, here we go with this week’s news!

Winter Ball

Furness! Get merry with us at this year’s Winter Ball… We will be travelling to the Netherwood Hotel for our annual Winter Ball on Tuesday 11th December 2018.

Tickets are on sale NOW until December 3rd, and you can buy them here. (Ticket prices include luxury coach travel to and from the hotel, a 3-course dinner, entertainment with magician David Lancaster, and a disco!)

Are you thinking of joining our wonderful JCR Team? Well, now is your chance! You can nominate yourself by sending in your manifesto to Furness College Facebook Page.  On the Facebook page, you can also check out what is involved in any of the roles you’re thinking of nominating yourself for, as well as seeing what the current JCR have loved about being in their roles.

Nominations are open from 10am on Monday (12th) until 12pm on Friday (16th). Campaigning will begin in Week 7, and Hustings and voting  will begin in Week 8.

Sports Fixtures

There were a lot of victories in Week 5!! Table Tennis won 16-5, Men’s Darts won 5-4, Men A Team Pool won 5-4, Women’s Darts won 5-2 and Women’s Pool won 6-3! (#MightyFurness)

Monday: Bar Sports vs Fylde at 7pm

Tuesday: Bar Sports vs Fylde and Netball As (vs Fylde) at 7pm

Wednesday: Netball Bs (vs Fylde) at 3pm and Football As (vs Cartmel) at 5pm

Friday: Netball Bs (vs Grizedale) at 7pm

Sexual Health Campaign 

Furness, let’s talk about sex! This week our Welfare Team will be giving you all the information about the on-campus Sexual Health Services that are available to you!

Some of this week’s events entail a sex-themed quiz (on Wednesday) AND a free sex-themed breakfast too (date TBC – keep an eye on Facebook)!

The Takeover: Manchester


For one night only, we leave our comfortable Sugar and VKs, it’s time for Lancaster to take over Manchester!

All of the colleges have collaborated to bring you a huge, uni-wide night out – this is definitely not a night you want to miss.

For just £12 (!!) you will be taken to Manchester on a coach directly from campus at 8pm. You can buy your tickets here.

Intercollegiate Quiz

Calling all Furness quizzers! We are looking to recruit a team for this year’s Inter-College quiz. This highly competitive quiz brings out the best of ‘College pride’, and takes a format similar to University Challenge. The winning team will split prize money of £300 and £100 goes to the runners-up.

Building Resilience Workshop

Student Housing Fair

On Thursday 15th November the Transitions Team will be attending the Student Housing Fair in The Great Hall from 12-4pm.

The first Housing Workshop will take place on Tuesday 4th December from 12-1.30 in Fylde Common Room. This will be an opportunity to come along to find flatmates to live within a format that is similar to speed dating. To book a place email

Do you need advice on how to develop your study skills? Support is available through a variety of activities provided by the library. Resources include online study modules, workshops and one to one sessions, check out the Learning Skills and Development website to find out more or to sign up for a workshop or one to one session.
