Support and Welfare

FurCAT – Furness College Advisor Team

In addition to our First Year College Reps who are on hand all year to help our First Year students, we also have a welfare system.

Our dedicated welfare team consisting of  Rev Kevin Huggett (Welfare Team Leader), Abby Chamberlain (College Advisor), Martin Ennis (College Advisor), Dr Rebecca Killick (College Advisor) and Becky Sheppard (College Advisor).

The welfare e-mail address which should be used for all queries or to make an appointment, is .  This email address will be checked on a daily basis (Monday to Friday) during term-time, and the team aims to respond within 24 hours on these days. 

College Wellbeing Officer

We have a dedicated College Wellbeing Officer, Taryn Whitford, who will be working with the FurCAT welfare team supporting our students and holding information sessions on various aspects of welfare over the academic year.  Taryn will be based in A18 at times to be advised.

Outside of the above, the College Manager, Jo Dickinson is available Monday – Friday between 9:00am – 3:00pm for general queries as well as welfare issues, or just pop in for a chat!

Much more important, our Furness College team of Porters are on duty 24 hours a day to look after you.

COLLEGE LOANS

Furness College can offer short term College Loans of up to £100 for those Furnessians who find themselves in need.  The money can be made available on the same day, but must be repaid within six weeks to the Cashiers Office in University House.

If you do require a loan, please see the College Manager in the College Office in the first instance.

FURNESS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Furness College offers annually a limited number of awards (around £200-£250 each) to present and former undergraduate members of the College who wish to commence postgraduate study at Lancaster University.  The awards will take into consideration academic ability, financial hardship and an involvement in the College’s activities.

A completed application form (available from the College Office), an academic reference and a covering letter should be sent to the Principal, Dr Wlodek Tych via the

 VACATION TRAVEL AWARDS

The college has a small amount of money available to make grants to undergraduates (normally first or second year students) who wish to travel for some educational purpose, but not as part of their degree, during the Spring or Summer Vacations.

These typically vary from £50 to £150 and are limited by the funds available.  Applications will be judged by the Senior Advisor and JCR President who will look for projects which have some educational component but which are not simply work that is required for a particular University course.  The recipient of a grant is required to submit a report on his or her project by the last day of the following term.

If you would like to apply for a vacation travel award, application forms are available from Jo in the College Office.  The form should be completed and sent to the Senior Advisor, c/o in the college office by the following dates:

CAMPUS COMMUNITY FRIDGE

The Campus Community Fridge is a space for all students, staff and food businesses to share perfectly good quality surplus food rather than throwing it away. Find your nearest fridge at Bowland or Pendle porters lodges and keep an eye out on the Facebook Page for updates.
