Welcome to all new Furnessians – we have such an amazing week planned! Here is a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect – don’t worry about remembering it all, because you’ll get a full physical copy when you arrive! If you have any questions, feel free to message us through one of our social media accounts (see the right hand column), or pop down to the Furness info desk, which will be located in Furness Foyer all week. And if you haven’t already, make sure you’ve liked our Facebook page, Furness College Freshers 2016, to get all the latest news on what’s happening!

Saturday 1st October

Welcome to Furness College! Our Freshers Reps will be on hand to help you unpack and settle in, and we’ll have a BBQ and live music all afternoon. Any students living off-campus will be asked to attend registration at 4:30pm in Furness TV Room. At 5:30pm your reps will take you to the Welcome Talk, where you will be introduced to the SCR and JCR, before heading back to Furness for the night. Don’t worry about cooking dinner because there will be free food as well as games and live music – you’ll feel at home before you know it!

Sunday 2nd October

Today is your first full day at University! There is registration in the morning, a freshers photo at lunch and a compulsory consent talk in the afternoon. In the afternoon your fresher reps will also give you a tour of campus and town, if you’d like! And we don’t have just one but TWO main evening events! Firstly, there is a Beach Party in Trevor complete with Cocktails, Mocktails and live entertainment. We’ll then be heading into town for a UV Paint Party at Dalton Rooms, for which you’ll get a special paint party t-shirt in your welcome pack!

Monday 3rd October

On Monday morning we’re inviting any international students to Furness Foyer for a Coffee Morning. In the afternoon all students will be meeting their Major department for the first time. There will also be Inflatable Fun games throughout the afternoon in front of Furness Accommodation – a great way to meet new people! In the evening there is the first BAR CRAWL of the week, an off-campus JUNGLE themed bar crawl organised by LUSU (the student’s union) – make sure you show us your best jungle attire!

Tuesday 4th October

Today you’ll have talks to help you decide which minors to choose (if your course allows) – but before that, come down to the Furness Foyer for a FREE breakfast! In the afternoon we’ll have more Inflatable Fun games, as well as a compulsory welfare and deanery talk. In the evening we’ve got lots going on – if you’ve got tickets for the ghost walk then prepare yourself for a spooky tour of the city! If not, then we have our own college treasure hunt with Bowland and Cartmel. Either way, make sure you wear something themed “F” for Furness, because later in the evening we’ll be heading to Cartmel for a silent disco!

Wednesday 5th October

We’re halfway through the week, and today is when you’ll be enrolling onto your course. This afternoon is the last afternoon of the Inflatable Fun events and we’ll also have Women’s Bar Sports (3pm) and Table Tennis (4pm) Trials in the JCR Room, as well as an induction event held by UniSmart. In the evening we’ll see the very first “We <3 Trev Wednesdays” quiz of the year – a traditional pub quiz held in our very own college bar.

Thursday 6th October

This afternoon is Part 1 of Freshers Fair, where you can see the variety of societies Lancaster has to offer. In the afternoon and evening we have sports exhibitions – these are matches played against our rivals, Cartmel, so you can get a feel for what it’s like to get involved with college sport:

  • 2-3pm – Netball @ Netball Courts
  • 3-5pm – Football @ Grass Pitch
  • 6pm – Men’s Darts & Women’s Pool @ JCR Room/Trev
  • 7:30pm – Women’s Darts, Men’s Pool & Dominos @ JCR Room/Trev

We also have a dedicated netball taster session from 1-2pm at the netball courts – full football and netball trials will be taking place during week 1 of term (keep an eye on Facebook for more details nearer the time). The sports theme is continuing into the evening event, where we will be welcoming Cartmel into Furness for a night of fun bar sports challenges. The college rivalry is essential for Patriots, the annual sporting competition between Furness and Cartmel, and we need to show them which college truly is the best – the theme for the night is Trev’s Army, so make sure you come down in your Freshers t-shirt and get ready to show Cartmel who’s the best! We’ll then be heading to Hustle (in the city centre) to dance the night away.

Friday 7th October

Today it’s Major Orientation, where you’ll be told everything you need to know so that you’re ready to start your course on Monday. In the afternoon it’s Part 2 of Freshers’ Fair, where you can find out more about opportunities at university and stock up on loads of freebies – make sure you’re there early for the free pizza! We’ll also have Men’s Bar Sports Trials at 3pm in the JCR Room. In the evening we’re staying on campus for Furness Fest, a night of live music (similar to what the end of year Extrav’s will be like). Each college will be holding their own event on campus, and you’re welcome to go and see what they’re up to as well.

Saturday 8th October

Today it’s a chilled day so you can do whatever you please, wahey! Saturday’s evening event is a fully fledged casino night! Make sure you dress to impress – prizes will be awarded to those who win the most. You can then head to the student union club, The Sugarhouse, for the last night out of the week.

Sunday 9th October

You’ve made it! The week is over! Today there will be a lovely boat cruise on Lake Windermere for those who have purchased tickets. In the evening we’ll be having a few games of bingo in Trev, the perfect way to end the week.

Chill Factor

If none of the main evening events take your fancy, then don’t fret! We’ll be hosting “chilled” evenings in the Furness TV room as an alternative to a big night out. This will include board games, movie nights and video game tournaments (make sure you practice your Mario Kart, Fifa and Just Dance!) – we’ll make sure there is something for everyone.
