Trev’s Times – WEEK THIRTY

Hello there Furnessians! Guess what – it’s the last week of term! And what better way to celebrate than EXTRAV! Of course, it’s going to be an emotional week: people graduating, people moving out of their first year flats, but let’s focus on the happy things for now, shall we? Here’s what’s going on this week…

New JCR Members

Although we’re sadly saying goodbye to some our JCR members, we’d like to give a big welcome to our newest officers:

Kyle Settrey – President
Nicola Hall – Democracy and Finance
Georgina Henderson – Welfare and Campaigns
Lauren Whittaker – Media and Comms
For reference, this is your new president:
And on the subject of the JCR…

Co-Options

Some of our JCR are stepping down, which means we are looking to co-opt in new officers for the positions of VP Socials and Events, VP Welfare and Socials and Events. If you’re interested, send a manifesto for your chosen position to the Furness College Facebook page. The deadline is 4pm on Tuesday 26th June.

Darts Invitational

A big well done to Tom Davison (Schoolman) for winning Furness’ third annual Darts Invitational after winning 9-6 (finishing with a 112 check!) in the final with Joshua Waddington (J-Wad). A big thanks to everyone who took part in this years tournament! Up the darts!

Open Day Ambassadors Needed

The university will be hosting an Open Day on Saturday 14th July, and we are looking for Furness students to represent the college. The rate of pay is £8.90 per hour, and you will be provided with campus accommodation the night before and paid travel to and from Lancaster. For more information, please email Jo Dickinson by Wednesday 27th June.

Graduation Tickets

Please don’t forget to collect your graduation guest tickets from the Furness College Office, room A13 Furness before Friday 29th June 2018.

Lancaster Career Mentoring Programme
The deadline for application to the popular Lancaster Career Mentoring Programme has been extended to midnight 29th June. Please apply using this link – https://lancaster.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/career-mentoring-programme-2018mentees Why should you apply? Well, in the words of a previous mentee:

“I would like to thank you once again for putting me in touch with my mentor. There are no words to describe how thankful I am. Without his help and support, I wouldn’t have been able to get on a graduate scheme in the public sector. He is one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. I could always count on him – even when I was a bit down and was losing faith in myself, he was always there to cheer me up and motivate me. I do not know if the other mentors are as amazing as he is – but if you ever want me to write something about the Scheme for the university, I am more than happy to do so, because I am eternally grateful for everything he has done for me and for the time he has sacrificed to help me follow my dreams and become a better person!”

The good news is that there isn’t just one ‘amazing’ mentor. There are over 100 amazing mentors in a wide range of industries, who are willing to help you as you think about your future career prospects! Even if you don’t have a clue about what career you’d like to explore, it doesn’t matter. Your mentor will help you think about different options & guide you to what feels right for you. It doesn’t matter what stage you’re at, which degree you’re doing or how academic you are, a mentor can be found to suit you. Once you’ve been matched with a mentor, you will be able to:

– Develop practical skills and confidence to enter your chosen profession
– Build personal and professional networks
– Increase your understanding of your chosen industry and gain exposure to current professional practises – and trends
– Link academic study to industry realities
– Broaden your knowledge of the career options open to you
– Learn what employers are looking for when they hire graduates

Apply soon & don’t miss out on this unique opportunity.

EXTRAV!!

After a long long wait (and lots of preparation), extrav week is finally here! Furness Extrav – LOST COLLEGE – will be this Thursday, and we can’t wait! If you’re still unsure of what to wear, here is a handy pinterest board for some inspiration!

And that’s it folks! That was a lot of information, I’ll admit, but now it’s time to enjoy your last week of term. The last few weeks have flown by, and whether you’re spending this time on campus or you’re already packing for home, we hope you all have a lovely summer! For those of you graduating, good luck for your results and whatever you’ve got waiting for you out there, and for the rest of you – see you in October!!
