Hello there, Furness! How are we all finding term 2 so far? Don’t worry about those deadlines and exams – there’s lots to look forward to! Let’s see what’s going on this week…

Don’t miss out on this week’s quiz – now on THURSDAYS! We’ll be in Trev from 7:30pm. This week’s specialist topic is Colorado! As usual, £1 a head to play.

 

Extrav Committee

Interested in being part of the event of the year?? We’re looking for people to join the Furness Extrav Committee 2019! For those who don’t know, Extrav (short for extravaganza) is each college’s end of year party, and Furness’ are the best! You’ll have a hand in making decisions, the promotion, the decoration and setting up, among much more! Message the Furness Facebook if you’re interested!

 

Sport

Last week Furness Bar Sports went up against Pendle! Men’s Darts won 6-3, Women’s darts lost 4-3, Men’s A pool lost 5-4, Men’s B pool won 6-3 and Women’s Pool lost 7-2.

Table Tennis won 13-11 against Pendle

In Netball, the Mighty Mountains went up against the Med Ballers, losing 33-0

Football B’s played Pendle, winning 7-2 (Man of the Match – Jacques Birch with 6 goals!!)

Trev’s Times – WEEK TWELVE!

Good morning, Furness! How are we all feeling after the first week back? Hopefully, you have all settled back into the groove of things and are ready to get going with Lent Term! Here’s what we have going on this week…

Pre-Patriots

Furnessians, save the date! This Wednesday, January 23rd is PRE-PATRIOTS! Our warm-up event for one of Furness’ most important events of the year – Patriots! We have:

Football 1:30-3:00pm on the Grass Pitch

Netball 3:00-4:00pm on the Outdoor Netball Court

Bar Sports 7pm onwards in Trev

And the day will end in Sugar to celebrate our win… right? Right!

Last week’s sports scores… Netball As lost 20-16 to Cartmel, and 48-16 to County and Netball Bs lost to Bowland 30-15 and County 38-9. Bar Sports played against Grizedale, where Men’s Darts won 5-4, Women’s Darts won 5-4 and Pool B’s lost 6-3.

Your Feedback

Here in Furness, we value each student’s feedback and continually strive to deliver the best student experience possible, which is why we’re trying to raise awareness of the idea that you can get involved in our weekly meetings.

Here, you can make suggestions for the JCR to consider in their meetings whether it be events ideas and general feedback – please let us know how we’re doing, especially if there is something we need to change!

Looking for housemates to live with 2019/20?

Why not come along to a Housing Workshop run by the Transitions Team?  Workshops are running Tuesday 22nd January and Tuesday 5th February, 12.00pm until 1.30pm in Fylde Common Room.  The workshops are an opportunity to meet other students who are looking to live off campus next academic year and find people who have similar interests and expectations of shared living.  At each workshop, there will also be a short presentation from Lancaster University Homes. Places are limited so to book please email transitions@lancaster.ac.uk

Furness College Charity Challenge

Furness College Charity Challenge group is hoping to make a difference for one chosen charity local to Lancaster. The group have shortlisted five charities that do amazing work in the local community and would love you guys to vote for the one which you think we should work for this term:

For taking part in a 90 minute focus group on your experience of Lancaster University.  The University and Lancaster University Students’ Union would like to hear from a range of different UK undergraduate student groups.  To register your interest, please email outreach@lancaster.ac.uk and state which group you would like to sign up to.

The groups are:

LBGTQ+ students  l  Students from a BTEC background  l  Disabled students  l    care experienced students  l  Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic students  l    Mature Students  l  Males from low socio-economic backgrounds (typically in receipt of a bursary).

The Focus Groups will be held on one of the following dates: Wednesday 30th January and Wednesday 6th February 2019.

Nick Lewis Memorial Football Match:  Saturday 16th March 2019 at 1:00pm

Please come and join us for the Nick Lewis Memorial Football Match.  The football match starts at 1:00pm and there will be a presentation in the Furness TV Room from 3:00-4:00pm.  Everyone is welcome.

International Languages Cafe

Explore communication across cultures and languages while meeting new people! The event is open to home students and international students interested in sharing and brushing up any of their language skills, from complete beginners to native speakers.

1-2pm, every Friday during term-time in The Roundhouse.

Jam-in-Furness: Friday 22nd March at 8:00pm

All are welcome to join us in the Furness JCR for our ‘Jam-in-Furness’ on Friday 22nd March from 20:00 until 23:00.  Entry for this event is free. If you are a musician and/or singer and would like to join then please contact Paul at paul@paulpalmersax.com or come along and enjoy some live music.

Student Switch Off Ambassador Training

Are you looking to boost your CV and for the chance to volunteer on an international environmental campaign? Why not volunteer as a Student Switch Off Ambassador?

The Student Switch Off is the energy-saving campaign across the colleges at Lancaster and other universities across Europe. Right now they are looking for keen students who would like to become Ambassadors -volunteers that can help promote the campaign in their college, and make a big difference!

Happy New Year, Furness! Hope you’ve had a lovely Christmas! Who’s excited for term two, hm? Bet you’ve been missing Trev’s Times the most, haven’t you? If not, we’ve got loads of stuff going on to get you back in the mood. Also – a huge hello to all our new Furness students! Let’s see what’s happening this week!

REFRESHERS!

We’re recreating the best week of the year (and giving you a taste of what’s to come) with four events spread over the next few weeks. First up is…

 

Trev Quiz

Trev Quiz is back! We’ll be in Trev on Wednesday at 7:30pm with a specialist topic of…drum roll….Liam Neeson! It’s a great way to reconnect with all your pals from last night, and win some money! £1 a head to play

 

Refreshers Night Out

Next up is the ReSESHers Refreshers Night Out on Friday Week 1. Forget about those post-holiday deadlines for a night and celebrate surviving the first week of term! We’ll be starting the night in Trev with games and a DJ set (join us here if you want to get your hands on one of our free sugar wristbands!), then we’ll be off to Hogarths in town (with drinks deals) and ending the night in Sugar!! We can’t wait!

 

Movie Night! 

Our next event is our Sunday Movie Night! Join us in the TV room at 7:30pm and get comfy. What film? You decide! We’ll be putting up a poll later on this week!

 

Pre-Patriots

In preparation for this years Patriots (week 8), we’ll be holding a mini-tournament on January 23rd (Wednesday week 2). Our netball, football and bar sports teams will battle it out, followed by a night in Sugar! Let’s show Cartmel who’s boss!

 

Afternoon Tea 

Our welfare team are starting off the year with afternoon tea on Friday week 1. Bring your friends, meet your new welfare officers and enjoy some free snacks for a relaxing afternoon. Furness Foyer, 2-3pm.

 

International Pizza Night 

We’d like to give a warm welcome to all our new international Furnessians! Come and join our international pizza night on Wednesday to meet interesting people from all over the world (+ free food). You’ll also get to meet your brand new international officer (Harriet) and the SCR!

 

 

Have Your Say!

 Any ideas for the college? From week 2, we’re going to be putting out a suggestion box (or a google drive) so you can have your input into what gets discussed in JCR meetings. Get thinking!

 

 Senior Advisor

Dr James Mawdesley, Research Development Officer (FHM), has been appointed as the new Senior Advisor of Furness College. James will take over from Kevin Huggett who stepped down as Senior Advisor at the end of last month.

 

Assistant Dean Patrols – reminder

Our Assistant Deans patrol the accommodation regularly for breaches and to make sure everything is as it should be. Beth, Chris and Rose all live in the college, and you can stop them and talk to them if you see them. They and the Porters are the first point of contact outside of office hours. Begin the new term with a brew!

Tea and Chat sessions are continuing this term, 12-1pm on Wednesdays in Bowland Bar.  Relax, connect with other students and enjoy a free hot or soft drink.  The Transitions Team host the weekly sessions to encourage all students to take a break and look after their own wellbeing.  Make time for tea and meet some new people!

 

Start the new year on the right foot …

Take a mid-week break from your studies and enjoy some fresh air.  Join the Transitions Team on a relaxed 30 minute walk along the campus woodland trail.  We meet in Alexandra Square, outside The Base, at 3pm on Wednesdays during term time.  It’s free and no sportswear is needed.

 

Join the College Sustainability Challenge – £750 for the winning team!

• A chance to help Lancaster University become more environmentally sustainable
• An opportunity to win £750 (1st prize), £250 (2nd prize)
• An experience that will give you new skills and impress future employers

Furness College has been invited to put forward a team to compete in fourth annual College Sustainability Challenge. In a team, you will be presented with the various challenges the university faces concerning environmental sustainability and asked to come up with innovative ideas and solutions. As a team, you will need to collaborate and access the expertise of the network of academics and professional staff and students across the University in order to develop your idea.

The competition will climax in Week 19 when ideas will be pitched to a panel of experts. The winning team will be awarded £750 with the runner-up receiving £250.

Colleges Charity Challenge – Furness team and next steps

Join in the Colleges Charity Challenge 2019 to support a worthy cause and boost your CV. The challenge launch event is on Thursday 17th January, at which support – and pizza! – will be given to teams. The event is open to students already part of college teams after the Charity Challenge 5thDecember Info Session and also anyone who couldn’t attend that event but would like to join a college team now. There will be a short presentation of key information and time to ask questions of staff supporting the challenge as you progress your ideas as a team.
